A flexible visual system for communicating science with clarity

GMAR is a Marine Geosciences research group affiliated with the University of Barcelona, dedicated to studying the geological processes that shape marine systems and their relationship with the surrounding territory. Its work combines scientific research, environmental analysis, and academic collaboration.

The project addressed the need to organize and bring visual coherence to a complex, highly technical content ecosystem. The new identity is structured as a robust, flexible system capable of adapting to multiple media and reinforcing scientific communication that is clear, rigorous, and institutionally recognizable.

Graphic elements

The logo’s shapes are inspired by ocean currents and the organic movement of schools of fish, symbolizing the synergy between marine life and its environment. These shapes have served as the foundation for a series of adaptable patterns that retain the logo’s essence while adjusting to various colors and formats. This approach ensures visual consistency and reinforces the connection between all brand elements.

To visually complement the brand and lend it a more approachable, relaxed tone—contrasting with the formality typical of a scientific research group—a secondary color palette has been introduced to accompany the blues of the primary palette. This secondary palette includes orange and earthy tones (representing geology) and greenish hues (representing biodiversity), and is designed for more informal contexts that allow for greater creative freedom. Examples include annual planners or everyday office supplies.

GMAR’s web design was conceived as a natural extension of its new visual identity. We created a clear, structured platform that makes their research areas easy to understand, while conveying the brand’s visual impact through the consistent use of typography, color, and graphic elements. The result is an intuitive, engaging website that blends academic rigor with a modern, accessible digital experience.
